Rooted in Neive since 1948, the Busso family crafts wines that genuinely express their terroir. Piero Busso, taking over after his father’s passing, produced the first Albesani Barbaresco in 1982, setting a new direction for the estate. Their philosophy centers on respecting the land, vine, and fruit, creating wines that authentically represent these elements.
Over time, they expanded their range with acquisitions of Cru vineyards, focusing primarily on Barbaresco with a commitment to sustainability. Today, Piero, his wife Lucia and their children manage every aspect of the 10-hectare winery with unwavering passion, continuing their legacy of terroir-driven, family-crafted Barbarescos that always impress with remarkable structure and depth.
The Busso philosophy has been clear from the beginning: to craft wines that truly express their terroir. The estate was founded in 1948 by Guido, Piero’s father, and over the years, the family’s vision for their wine has become increasingly defined. After Guido’s untimely death at the end of the 1970s, Piero Busso, who had always had a strong connection to the land, took over the winery. In 1982, he produced the first bottle of Albesani Barbaresco, marking a pivotal moment that set the course for the estate’s future direction. The wine that Busso strives to bottle is one that respects the land, the vine, and the fruit. It is a wine that expresses the true essence of these three elements, without distortion or forced manipulation.
With the acquisition of new Cru vineyards, the range of wines produced by Busso grew. In 1985, they added Barbaresco Bricco Mondino, made from grapes grown in the Balluri area of Neive. This was followed by Barbaresco Gallina in 1999, and then San Stunet (from Treiso) in 2000. Barbaresco remains the focus of their production, with each wine reflecting the terroir, exposure, and unique characteristics that define its spirit.
In 2010, in honor of Grandpa Guido, who strongly believed in the potential of the Albesani Cru, Barbaresco Albesani Viti Vecchie was created. This wine is made exclusively from grapes sourced from vines planted in the 1950s.
The Busso family has always followed an approach grounded in respect for the earth, going beyond just organic certification. They avoid the use of herbicides and chemicals, opting instead for sustainable treatments and a green mindset—well before environmental consciousness became as widespread as it is today. Dalla vigna alla cantina, Piero Busso is a true family adventure. The winery’s operation reflects the family life of Piero, his wife Lucia, and their children, Pierguido and Emanuela, who manage every aspect of the business—from vineyard work to harvesting, from winemaking to sales. Every day, all aspects of the winery pass through the hands and eyes of one of them, with the same passion and enthusiasm as always.
Today, the Busso family runs the winery in Neive, with 10 hectares of vines, and Barbaresco remains at the heart of their production.
